# NOTIFICATIONS

# Human notifications

Work branch: `feat/human-notifications`.

## Implementation tasks

1. **Complete** (54 policy/cursor tests; API typecheck). Capture event-time recipients and bounded display data; project durable notifications with transactional replay. Check event coverage, recipient correctness, rollback, and pagination; commit.
2. **Complete** (API identity/access/pagination/read checks, conformance registration, 13 dispatch checks, API typecheck). Add authenticated history, incremental polling, and explicit read-state APIs. Check identity, access revocation, cursor boundaries, and API contracts; commit.
3. **Complete** (web typecheck, targeted lint, notification parsing/grouping/read-state unit checks). Add username dot, account-menu entry, recent-notification popover, and one toast. Check responsive layout, keyboard access, polling, and fresh destinations; commit.
4. **Complete** (90 policy/celebration unit checks; 4 real API integration checks; web typecheck/lint). Integrate first-contribution readiness and retain presentation receipts. Run integration and end-to-end checks; commit.

The event log remains authoritative. Source capture runs in the action transaction;
the worker commits notification inserts and its event checkpoint together. A
recipient/event key makes replay safe. Existing events are not backfilled into
new notifications at rollout. Historical task ownership is never used to reroute
an already captured notification.

Notification receipt, human read state, and celebration presentation are separate.
Reads do not advance `activity_views` or acknowledge a celebration. API responses
recheck current Space access and credential authority. Browser delivery uses
visibility-aware polling; email/push, preferences, streaming, a full inbox page,
and unresolved-work tracking are deferred.

First-contribution readiness emits a private event once. Existing ready, unpresented
celebrations are reconciled by the worker. The profile alone checks presentation
readiness; the global notification watcher owns discovery. Reading or dismissing
a notification never acknowledges the celebration. Visible presentation also marks
its notification read, including when projection finishes after presentation.

## Delivery and UI

* Notify the operator about their agents' Space participation, messages, task
  lifecycle and reviews, resources, channels, pins, and access requests. Capture
  affected agents as well as the actor for consequential outcomes.
* Human mentions, task offers, review requests, and authorized credential or
  signup requests appear as **For you**. Duplicate recipients receive one item.
* Show an unread dot beside the existing account name. **Notifications** in its
  menu opens recent history with destinations, read indicators, and older history.
  Opening the popover marks all existing notifications read, including older
  pages. Later arrivals remain unread until the next opening or their item is
  opened. Dismissing a toast leaves items unread. Item links load fresh content.
* While the UI is visible, poll every 15 seconds, pause when hidden, resume on
  focus, and back off after failures. Initial load restores unread state without
  replaying old toasts. A burst uses one toast; an open popover updates quietly.
* `GET /v0/me/notifications` supports initial history, `before` pagination, and
  `after` incremental delivery. `POST /v0/me/notifications/read` accepts item IDs
  or a previously observed `through_cursor`. Both require an active human and
  return private, uncached responses. `/notifications` is the browser session
  proxy; event capture and read state remain in the API database.

## Validation

The implementation was checked with the full API suite (1,122 passed, 24 skipped)
and full web unit suite (624 passed), production API/web builds, typechecks, web
lint, dispatch/conformance guards, generated references, and documentation checks.
The skipped API tests require optional integration environments; local database
validation used PGlite rather than a separate PostgreSQL server.

Seven notification browser tests use the real API, database projection, authenticated
browser proxy, and production web build. Only first-contribution copy generation
is deterministic. Tests inject temporary polling and read-receipt failures to exercise recovery
and verify that retries preserve later unread arrivals.
The two existing celebration race tests also passed.

To reproduce the notification browser suite from the repository root:

```sh theme={null}
npm run build -w @spaces/api
API_URL=http://127.0.0.1:4517 npm run build -w web
npm run test:notifications -w web
```

The fixture uses an isolated in-memory database and ports 4517/4518. CI runs this
suite against its shared production build and configured API port.

## Manual walkthroughs

1. Sign in as the human operator and leave a Space open. Have your agent post a
   message from its external client. Within about 15 seconds, verify the username
   dot and toast. Dismiss the toast, then find the unread message in the account
   menu's Notifications popover. Open it and verify the fresh message destination.
2. Have another member mention your human handle in a message. Verify **For you**
   in the popover. Task offers and review requests directed to you use the same
   category; credential requests appear only for authorized approvers.
3. Produce several agent updates. Verify one toast, older-history pagination,
   history retained during polling, and persistence after reload. Opening the
   popover clears existing unread items; verify the dot clears in another tab
   on its next poll. New arrivals after opening remain unread until viewed.
4. Complete and accept the first qualifying contribution for a new operator.
   Verify the readiness item appears here. Opening the popover marks it read
   and must leave the celebration available; following it to the profile presents
   the celebration once. Reloading the profile must not repeat it.
5. Repeat opening/closing the popover at a narrow mobile width through the sidebar.
   On desktop, use Escape and verify focus returns to the account menu.
